Do you use a Retinol skin product or want to use one and have concerns? Read this and make and informed decision!
Retinol is classified as a type of retinoid, a group of compounds derived from Vitamin A, and is widely used in over-the-counter and prescription skincare formulations.
When applied to the skin, retinol is converted into retinoic acid, its active form, which interacts with skin cells to promote regeneration and repair. It penetrates the skin's outer layer (epidermis) and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, helping to improve skin texture, fine lines and tone. Retinol can also help in treating acne by unclogging pores and reducing oil (sebum) production, and it also brightens skin tone as an exfoliant.
It is known that using retinol should be with a slow start and low concentration, and with restrictions toward sun exposure as well as risks with pregnancy/breastfeeding and sensitive skin or associated with conditions like eczema.
Recently Health Canada has announced restrictions to a few ingredients, including chemical retinol and its esters. A revision is being considered to reduce permitted concentration to avoid risks like redness, dryness and skin pigmentation if exposed to the sun.
That is why natural products formulators have been using other retinoids that have excellent results. Our natural hero today is Bakuchiol. A botanical extracted from the Babchi plant – is one of them and is known as the ‘natural retinol’ in skincare. Bakuchiol is a plant-based skincare wonder derived from the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea corylifolia plant. Known for its gentle yet powerful properties, it offers all the benefits of traditional retinol—like reducing fine lines, evening skin tone, and boosting collagen—without the irritation or sensitivity. Rich in antioxidants, bakuchiol soothes the skin, making it perfect for those with reactive skin types. Its magic lies in its ability to deliver glowing, youthful skin while being kind to your complexion and the planet. Although bakuchiol has very different chemical composition from retinol, but as a strong antioxidant, it achieves great results covering areas like cell regeneration, collagen stimulation, wrinkles softening and helps acne scars and skin discoloration, without the associated risks. One can use products including bakuchiol daily and without fearing the risks of UVA protection, and sensitive skin folks can enjoy its lovely effect on their skin without concerns.
Now we can enjoy this new natural hero and see results safely!
